Morąg Cultural Centre runs a website with news, class information, documents and a long-standing archive of images and recordings. Our task was to improve the accessibility of this existing WordPress site within a contracted scope based on WCAG 2.2 AA. We preserved its visual appearance while working on navigation and access to content. The work covered menus, galleries, forms, document structure, image descriptions and multimedia. We also prepared 27 text versions of documents and two easy-to-read materials. The project was formally accepted on 15 September 2026.
Wyzwanie
A barrier can appear in the main menu or several steps later, inside a scanned document or a recording without captions. The project therefore required work on shared interface elements and a large content archive, followed by checks on the live website.
Navigation without a mouse
Menus, submenus and galleries needed to work with a keyboard. Users require visible focus and a predictable way to move between controls.
A large content archive
Thousands of images, recordings and documents needed additional work. Improving the website template alone would not make information stored only in images or sound accessible.
Different ways to access information
Screen readers need structure and descriptions, while some visitors need simpler language. The scope covered technical changes and alternative forms of content.
Working on an existing website
The centre was publishing on a live WordPress site. Changes needed checking on computers and phones, alongside guidance for editors preparing future content.

We worked on the existing website, its archive and publishing practices. Interface improvements were combined with text versions of documents, captions and visual descriptions. Verification included automated checks, keyboard operation and screen reader checks.
Menus, galleries and visible focus
We improved keyboard access in menus, submenus, galleries and toolbar elements. We refined control names and the visibility of the active element. When navigating without a mouse, users need to know where they are and how to reach the next part of the page.
Page structure and form labels
We organised headings and page regions, improved contrast and added clearer labels for forms and controls. This gives information a more readable hierarchy and helps screen readers identify what each element does. The work covered shared site components whose behaviour affects many pages at once.
More than 13,000 alternative image descriptions
We added 13,607 image descriptions and marked 418 elements as decorative. At this scale, we used AI-assisted automation with manual sample checks. Descriptions aim to convey information contained in images, while decorative elements should not unnecessarily lengthen a screen reader’s reading of the page.
Alternative formats for recordings and documents
We prepared 100 caption tracks for recordings with audio and 101 visual descriptions. We created HTML text versions for 27 documents, linked alongside the original files. One example is the centre’s programme for 2025–2030: alongside the scan, visitors can open the same content as text that a screen reader can read.
Two easy-to-read materials and an accessibility statement
We prepared easy-to-read information about the centre and instructions for joining classes, using short sentences and a simple structure. We also updated the accessibility statement and enabled HTTPS. Validation of easy-to-read materials with users remains the centre’s responsibility; the statement also describes remaining limitations.
Deployment checks and editorial guidance
The final automated audit covered 1,044 URLs at viewport widths of 375 and 1,440 pixels. No axe rule violations were detected in that check. We handed over a report, documentation and publishing instructions to help editors maintain accessibility in new content. The automated result describes the tested scope at that date; it does not replace a full manual assessment or independent WCAG certification.
